Bodies In Motion: Short Trips In An Expanding Universe

Bodies in Motion: Short Trips In An Expanding Universe is a collection of first-person memoirs, each of which casts a different light on the impact of movement/travel on the author. In these stories, Fels takes the reader to the Philippines, China, Dubai, Lebanon, Canada, and Thailand, as well as California, Kansas, New York, and New Mexico. Although Bodies in Motion can be enjoyed as a travel book, it is first and foremost an interior journey as Fels gains new understandings into himself and his world. As in previous works, Fels treats his characters, locations, and himself with humor, insight, and respect.

“Oh – I’m so sorry.”

Hassan looks up from the iPad. He’s flipping through my photos. He and I sit together on the sofa in the furnished studio apartment he shares with his wife, Sara. Sara’s reading. Sitting on the bed. We’re in Sharjah – an Emirate that butts up against the better-known, wealthier, glitzier Emirate of Dubai.

From where I sit, I can’t see what Hassan sees on the screen – why he would say that. But from his eyes I know it’s serious.

Something that involves me.
